Green Business Events: Our Green Journey

We believe that it is only fair for us to be taken seriously in this space if we show that we take the issues seriously. One recurring theme is the need for everyone to engage for real change to happen. We might not have the carbon footprint of a global manufacturing giant, but there are CO2e implications and events involve travel. Just witness the negative stories about environmental impact the Bali conference and Live Earth had to contend with. – They are very open to the scrutiny of others.

We’re very happy to be in the vanguard with those others in the events industry who are looking at how we might reduce the environmental impact of all events. In fact we even held a conference on the subject – the Greening Events Summit in April. Please go to our archive to access some of the presentations. Having decided to follow this important path it quickly becomes clear that there is no silver bullet, the issues are complex and the tools at our disposal are not necessarily the ones we believe in.

There are a number of things we have already decided to do: No mailings (which is a big change). Only choosing venues with Green policies. Our next step is to explore BS8901 and look at some way of off-setting the inevitable emissions that come with travel. Ultimately that might mean less travel. Watch this space.

'Green Monday' launches

On Monday 7th July we held our first Green Monday event. Green Monday is a news and networking event for corporate climate change leaders. It’s aimed primarily at FTSE 350 organisations, but with a number of other innovators and leading thinkers. Santiago Gowland gave an excellent talk on the need for brands to properly understand how they each individually engage with the many issues related to climate change. We had over 100 people there, which was proof to us of how popular this event is going to be given the appalling weather that night. Well done to everyone who made it and I hope you got as much out of it as those we heard back from. You can make your application here now for September’s event.

September’s Green Monday – Government Chief Scientific Adviser + Head of CSR, M&S

We are delighted to welcome John Beddington (Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government) and Mike Barry (Head of CR at Marks & Spencer) at the next Green Monday. Both will be addressing the issue of how we adapt to a world of reduced resource security. If you would like to join our expert group, get a bit of an update and make some new contacts then please join us on Monday 8th September. You can make your application here now.
